Selby Scholar paves road as a future industrial engineer

2025 Selby Scholar Juan Sanabria is majoring in industrial engineering at the University of South Florida. His fall semester will be busy, no doubt, but Juan wasn’t resting over the summer. He participated in the CRISI internship program at the Transportation Technology Center in Colorado, hosted by ENSCO Rail.

Juan gained experience performing thermite rail welding, evaluating track performance, analyzing engineering test data, using ultrasonic rail inspection equipment to detect defects that can lead to derailments, and operating a locomotive under instructor supervision. Wow!

“Working alongside industry professionals showed me how engineering, technology, and data analysis improve the safety and reliability of the nation’s rail system while strengthening my passion for industrial engineering and transportation,” said Juan.

Juan’s brother Santiago became a 2026 Selby Scholar in May. We wish them both an incredible year of college.
