Grant Spotlight: Restoring the Historic Reid House

The Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition, Inc. (SAACC) preserves, celebrates and shares the cultural, artistic and historical heritage of African Americans in Sarasota and beyond.

In April 2023, the Selby Foundation was pleased to award SAACC with a grant in the amount of $99,970 to restore the historic Leondard Reid House built in 1926.

The Reid House is named for the early pioneer who helped establish Sarasota’s first African American community, Overtown, now the Rosemary District. The house, which carries a local historic designation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was recently moved in May 2022 from its Rosemary location to the southwestern corner of North Orange Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

SAACC was established after documentation of the history of Newtown’s 100-year existence was completed. The purpose was to identify a suitable location for and open an African American arts, cultural and history center. SAACC members believe that Newtown is a thriving, culturally and economically vibrant community that cherishes the African American experience and where people come to live, learn, work, invest and play.

Honoring history in our community means remembering and showcasing all contributions. The Selby Foundation appreciates the opportunity to play a role in shining a light on the important leadership and legacy of Leonard Reid.
