Intern Tammy Flores Shares Learning, Ideas, and Reflection

As an Intern at the Selby Foundation, Tammy Flores completed a multi-faceted experience including work with scholarship applicants, new Selby Scholars, and local scholarship providers.

Tammy’s in-depth interviews with regular participants in the Foundation’s Regional Scholarship Providers Network will be combined with additional input and survey data to help us better capture the impact of the collaborative learning environment. All organizations indicated intangible benefits they have received from participating, including increased knowledge about supportive practices for students and meeting peers who can be tapped for input and support. Some reported incorporating new practices such as converting one-time scholarships to renewable opportunities for students.

As part of her work, Tammy recommended new ideas for the team’s consideration as we continue to deepen engagement of Selby Scholars and alumni. One suggestion is giving Selby Scholar alumni a platform to deliver “TED Talk” like presentations about their college experiences to support those currently in college.

“I have learned something from everyone. Staff welcomed me and enriched me with the Selby values of humanity, humility, social responsibility, innovation, and stewardship,” said Tammy.

“Regional Scholarship Providers Network members educated me on their organizations and their important role(s) in the community. Selby Scholars inspired me by sharing their aspirations and goals that they aim to achieve in college. From alumni, I got to see my peers doing great things post grad. From the 2026 Scholarship Selection Committee, I thank them for letting me sit in and witness how much importance they put into every student’s application.

“As always I’ll take everything I learned from this experience into the world with me as I continue along pursing my future career goals. While also continuing my efforts to always be a source of positivity in the world.”

Tammy graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor’s in Biological Sciences as a Selby Scholar. Join us in wishing Tammy good luck as she studies for her MCAT, planning to pursue medical school.
