Questions for Today’s Nonprofit Board Members

We are fortunate to have quality opportunities in our region and online for nonprofit board members to learn about how excellent governance can shape their organization’s success.

As a recent participant in BoardSource’s Certificate of Nonprofit Board Consulting program, I appreciated the chance to think deeply about some questions we should all be asking during this time of change.

While many disruptions are difficult, changes in funding and to our environment may help trigger rethinking of our work and the most effective ways to concentrate our resources for good.

Here are some questions boards should be asking.

  1. What is the board’s approach to tackling a new challenge—or challenging the status quo?
  2. How do board members hear and respond to the voice of the people and community the organization is serving—their aspirations, needs, and barriers to success?
  3. What processes are in place to alert the board to new opportunities that would help the organization better meet its mission, whether it is resources, partnerships/alliances, or other aspects of the work?
  4. Has the level at which the board is working most of the time changed to meet the current environment? Is it merely fiduciary, is it strategic, or does it include generative conversations about big questions?
  5.  How does the board stay abreast of the larger community and region to understand the relevance of the organization and potential evolution needed at the organization?
