The Selby Foundation’s scholarship program provides valuable programs throughout the year that align to students’ interests based on our outreach.
With financial literacy listed as a top priority for Selby Scholars, the Foundation arranged a virtual learning opportunity with the Tampa-based nonprofit Young Money Solutions (YMS). Delivering impactful financial education results for economic empowerment, the team increases the financial capability and long-term financial wellness of underserved communities.
Genesia Doreus-Brinson, VP of Administration and Executive Director of YMS, shared her personal journey going to school and working full-time while trying to save money. Her parents’ immigrant roots in both Haiti and St. Lucia steeped her upbringing in the values of hard work, perseverance, and community support. Scholars immediately identified with Genesia.
Students followed up indicating how they plan to use the budget tools provided. Next up–managing time between the demands of work and school, beginner investment strategies, and apps to help manage money.
